What to Bring to a Family Law Consultation
Preparing for a family law consultation can help your lawyer understand your circumstances and identify the legal issues that may need to be addressed. You do not need to arrive with every document or decision finalized, but having some basic information available can make the initial conversation more productive.
Identification and Basic Information
Bring government issued identification along with your current contact information. Your lawyer may also need the legal names and relevant information for your spouse or former partner and any children involved.
If there are important dates connected to your matter, write them down beforehand. This may include the date you began living together, the date of marriage, the date of separation, and any previous agreements or court proceedings.
Financial Information
Financial documents can be particularly important when the matter involves child support, spousal support or property division.
Useful information may include:
✅ Recent income information
✅ Tax returns and notices of assessment
✅ Bank and investment statements
✅ Mortgage information
✅ Pension or retirement accounts
✅ Business interests
✅ Loans and other debts
You do not necessarily need complete financial disclosure for an initial consultation. A general understanding of your assets, debts and income can still help your lawyer identify the issues that may require further documentation.
Existing Agreements and Court Documents
Bring copies of any documents already connected to the matter. These may include a marriage contract, cohabitation agreement, separation agreement, parenting agreement, court order or previous correspondence from another lawyer.
Your lawyer should know about any existing deadlines, scheduled court appearances or agreements currently affecting your rights and responsibilities.
Parenting Information
If parenting arrangements are part of the matter, consider your children’s current schedules, living arrangements, schooling and any existing parenting routine.
It can also be helpful to identify which issues have already been agreed upon and which remain unresolved.
Questions for Your Lawyer
Write down the questions you want answered before the meeting. This can include questions about the legal process, possible next steps, documentation, timelines, negotiation, court proceedings and legal fees.
A family law consultation is an opportunity to understand where your matter currently stands and what options may be available.
